How an NDLS visit works
- Check if you can do it online. With a Public Services Card and a verified MyGovID you can apply at ndls.ie without visiting a centre.
- Book an appointment. Use the online booking service (log in with your driver number or PPSN) or call 0818 919 090. How to book.
- Gather your documents. Photo ID, proof of PPSN, proof of address and, if it applies to you, proof of residence and an eyesight or medical report. Full checklist.
- Attend and pay. Staff take your photo and signature at the desk. Pay by card, Google Pay, Apple Pay or Payzone voucher. The visit itself takes about 15 minutes once you are called.
- Wait for the post. Processing takes 5 to 8 working days, plus up to 10 working days for delivery by An Post.
NDLS or RSA driving test centre?
People mix these up all the time. The NDLS gives you the learner permit and, after you pass, the full licence. The test itself happens at one of the RSA's 60 driving test centres, which are in different buildings. If you are preparing for the test, check the current waiting times and pass rates by centre.
Frequently asked questions
How many NDLS centres are there in Ireland?
There are 34 NDLS centres, at least one in every county of the Republic. Dublin has four (Leopardstown, Citywest, Santry and Clarehall) and Cork has three (Cork City, Mallow and Skibbereen).
Can I walk in to an NDLS centre?
No. Every visit needs an appointment, booked online at ndls.ie or by phone on 0818 919 090.
What are NDLS opening hours?
Centres open 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday to Friday and 9:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday. They are closed on Sundays and bank holidays.
Do I have to use the NDLS centre in my county?
No. You can book at any of the 34 centres, which helps when your local one has no free slots.
Is the NDLS the same as the driving test centre?
No. The NDLS issues learner permits and licences. Driving tests are run by the RSA at separate driving test centres with different addresses.
How long does a new licence take to arrive?
The NDLS aims to process an application in 5 to 8 working days, then allow up to 10 working days for postal delivery. Foreign licence exchanges can take up to three months.
