Change of Address or Name

Update your address, surname, medical details or photo on your licence or learner permit.

Last checked against ndls.ie: 2 October 2026. Independent guide, not the NDLS or RSA.

Changing the address or name on your driving licence or learner permit is free, unless the card is also due for renewal or has been lost, in which case you pay that fee instead. You can do it online with a PSC and verified MyGovID.

Change of address

Online: PSC and verified MyGovID, plus proof of your new address dated within six months if it differs from your PSC record.

At a centre: your current licence, proof of PPSN, proof of the new address dated within six months, and a medical report if your case needs one. Book an NDLS appointment first.

The address on the proof must match the application exactly. See accepted proofs in What to bring.

Change of name

For online applications, you must first update your name with the Department of Social Protection (your PSC record). For centre visits, bring the evidence for your situation:

ReasonEvidence the NDLS asks for
Marriage or civil partnershipOriginal civil marriage or civil partnership certificate, or photo ID already in your new name. Certificates not in English or Irish need a certified translation by an accredited translator in Ireland.
Separation, divorce or dissolution (returning to birth surname)Court order, separation agreement, divorce decree or a solicitor’s letter, plus your original birth certificate or civil marriage/partnership certificate to show your birth surname
Irish-language version of your nameTwo official documents showing you have used the Irish version for two years, or photo ID in that name. This one needs a completed application form.
Deed pollOriginal Irish deed poll enrolled in the Irish High Court, or photo ID in your new name

Change of medical details

If your GP says a condition needs to be recorded on your driving record, submit a medical report form to the NDLS, online or at a centre. See Eyesight and medical reports.

Updating your photo

If your Public Services Card photo is more than 10 years old, the online service will not let you apply. Either renew your PSC on MyWelfare.ie (upload a new digital photo) or book an NDLS centre appointment, where a new photo is taken.

Do you need to tell your insurer?

The NDLS change does not update your insurance policy. Contact your insurer separately. For insurance, they normally only need your driver number, printed at 4d on the card.

Where to go

Popular centres: Santry, Leopardstown, Citywest, Clarehall, Cork City, Galway, Limerick, Waterford, Kilkenny, Athlone, Sligo, Letterkenny, Drogheda, Tralee. All 34 centres.
